Dear damien,

No ignorance was shown and certainly no offence was caused. Thank you for sharing your poem. Authors are the best interpreters of their own work and I am indeed interested in the circumstances surrounding its writing.

The reference to ‘the Watchers’ in the opening line somewhat puzzles me, since when I hear the term I think of ‘the Watchers’ that were (according to the Books of Enoch and Jubilees) the angels who lusted after the daughters of men and took them as wives, fathering the Nephilim (see Genesis 6:1-4; Enoch 15:8-9; Jubilees 10:1-5).

When I hear ‘Zion’, the song ‘Road to Zion’ by Petra is what comes to mind first. Zion, historically being the fortified hill of Jebus conquered by David (see 2 Samuel 5:7) was later the name applied to the entire city of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount and by extension the dwelling place of the LORD (see Psalm 9:11). In the New Testament, Zion is equated with the New Jerusalem:

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
..Hebrews 12:22-24

The ‘trumpet blast’ from Zion brings to mind the trumpet blast that will accompany the return of Christ and the gathering of His followers to be with Him forever in the New Jerusalem where there is no more death or mourning as there is in the current order of things (see 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelation 21:1-4).

‘Yet in time, does not appear’ brings to mind how we wait for the return of our Lord, until the end of the time that is allotted this current heavens and earth. ‘Cheat the death, Die in time’ is puzzling, though what I get from it is how we all eventually will die physically, but because of God’s gracious gift ‘cheat’ spiritual death (so to speak).

I suppose that I’ve hardly come close to your intended meaning, but hopefully have conveyed what it means to me when I read it. I would be most interested in your explanation, especially of the title ‘Self’ - it also quite puzzling.

Thanks again for sharing.

Take care and God bless,
J
