Most children ARE heterosexual

Hi, Indeed, the large majority of people are primarily heterosexual. Even the most liberal estimates around say that only 10% of people engage in more homosexual activity than they do heterosexual. Some studies point to figures as low as 3%. So your experience is of course wholly expected. It just doesn't mean much. Seeing as how social scientists estimate that upwards of 80% of children engage in same-sex-play before the age of puberty, you would have to find that most children "choose" heterosexuality. I wonder if you are aware, however, that it is quite widely accepted among sexologists (and just about everywhere else exept among certain fanatical Christian sects) that sexual orientation is not a choice. Sexuality exists across a wide spectrum of attraction. People who are more attracted to their own gender than to the opposite one do not choose that attraction. Enormous numbers of studies conducted over the past 30 years demonstrate quite conclusively that sexual orientation (or primary gender attraction) is fixed very early in life - many years before puberty, in fact. So, while sexual behavior may be and often is chosen, I don't think you can say that basic orientation is. I wonder at the subtle presumption in your post, btw. It seems to me, though perhaps I'm mistaken, that you feel that adults should guide childen to being heterosexual because that orientation is preferable. Surely you didn't mean to imply that? Jim |
