(or for murder) Hey, if any kid who is old enough to have a basic understanding of death and its permanence kills another person other than by accident, I WANT THEM IN JUVENILE COURT (or adult court if they have the mental and emotional capacity of an adult - this includes some 15-17 year olds). They NEED some major rehab and education, beyond what most parents can give. They also need access to counselors to help them deal with the guilt they feel or will probably later feel. And until I am convinced they won't pick up a gun and off someone else, they should be separated from society and/or closely supervised. Now, as for sex crimes, there are a few 11 year olds out there who are capabile of sexual relations in same way most 14-year-olds are (mentally and/or physically). Many of course, are doing no more than playing doctor at that age and mom and dad telling them "you are getting too old for that" is enough. IMHO, part of a policeman's job before arresting a kid is to get an idea of what's really going on, and where possible, leave the situation in the hands of the parents. This includes the 4 year old who kills, the 8 year old who fondles, and some 8 year olds who kill and some 11 year olds who fondle. -David ("d") |
