"Still, I find myself asking: Why would Abraham be prepared to kill his own son?"

I've long given up the notion that there is a single, correct interpretation to scripture. I think the same story can be used to convey many truths to us about God and about ourselves. Here's a possibility:

Abraham was a person who honestly sought to follow God's will. At some point, he came to believe that God wished him to sacrifice his son (personally, I can't imagine how he would come to that point) and was willing to act on it. He then realized that this was not the case at all (again, just how I've no idea). The point would be that he was willing to give up something he thought was as important in his life as anything could be, just to follow what he believed to be God's will. In the end though, he was saved from making what would have been a terrible mistake.

Like many others whose stories I've read here and on BC, I was ready to sacrifice being a BL to follow what I thought was God's will. I jumped through hoops in an effort to be a heterosexual with wife and family. But one evening, many years ago, I saw myself on the edge of an abyss and realized that what I was attempting was a big mistake. God's will was in my heart, not in what well-meaning and completely sincere people had been telling me. What I really had to sacrifice was the life of trying to please these folks who were very important to me.
