let's not depend on bad theology; the people gathered to meet Jesus after the resurrection received the Holy Spirit when he breathed on them (Jn 20). The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at His baptism (Lk 3). So the events of Pentecost are not related to the need or otherwise of a person involved for 'salvation' and provide no evidence about Mary's status before God. Much of the confusion in the debate is a lack of understanding of the significance of the co- in co-Redmptrix. It does not, in English, necessarily mean equal responsibility. In a divorce case the 'Respondent' is the other person in the marriage; the 'co-Respondent' is (or used to be when this was important) the person with whom the Respondent is alleged to have commited adultery, which is the reason for the divorce occurring. So the co-Respondent has an important role in the situation, but is not the same as the Respondent. That is at least a slightly more acceptable interpretation of the phrase which is being kicked around. (Sorry for the nature of the example...) |
