But why do you have hope?

I'm confident that I know what God thinks because my faith coincides with the faith of the early church and the faith of the church down the ages, as well as being validated by my experience of God. But if we chop bits out of the faith of the church because we don't like them, we have no objective basis for our faith - we are left with a faith that we would like to be true, but which we have chosen for ourselves. Of course the technical term for this is 'idolatry'!!

The Hebrews definition of faith (cpt 11 v.1) indicates that it is something more and something distinct from hoping - and it is that form of faith that saves. At the core of my being somewhere there is a sense of the reality of God that I've had for many years; I've always known which way is right, despite wandering off it more than once. I believe that that is 'faith' - as defined by the Hebrews passage; I don't know how far others share or are repulsed by such certainty.
