'To be exposed before your peers...'

Submitted by Forgiven on August 11 2001 03:09:39

I've talked in the past about some of the marginally unfortunate things that I have said at work; well another occurred today. There is a very cute 20 year old who could easily pass for 15 (he's got a girlfriend, they've been together for a long time, that's not the issue!). He comes to work on a motorcycle - and today had got himself a 'skin tight' leather suit for wearing on it. At the end of the day mention was made of this, and I joined in the general chorus of 'Let's see you in it'... but one of my colleagues who has made some pointed comments about me in the past threw in 'yes but you want to see him in it for a different reason'. I came out with a half hearted 'huh' (I'm very bad at thinking on my feet) and the conversation moved on. But it left me feeling very vulnerable and exposed; what does he know / think he knows / believe. And this might go somewhere unfortunate - though quite how is unclear - but having been outed over 20 years ago (as vanilla gay) at the age of 15 to a homophobic school, I'm not a fan of being 'Out' publically. Thoeretically there isn't a problem - I work for a large organisation with an anti-harrassment policy etc etc - but I really don't want to try it out.

A cautionary tale for us all!!
