In the current news there is a case pending in the US where the father of a nine year old boy is being prosecuted for punishing the boy by whipping him with a belt.. The father is a christian minister.. It has been reported that the whipping raised a few red marks on the boys buttocks but no real welts.. It is believed that he will be convicted and may serve time as well as having his name placed on the widely publicized child abuser registers.. This issue is somewhat close to me in that my own sister, who is a devout Pentecostal Christian, frequently disciplined her own children by beating all four of them, sometimes even quoting scripture.. she used hands, fists, belts, and other things.. (they live half the country away and I never knew this until the kids grew up.. they told me when they were in their 20's.. I am still not talking to her, btw..) The issue of corporal punishment by parents was discussed on several radio talk shows and many christians called in saying the minister should be released and be allowed to continue to discipline his son with the belt.. Upon hearing these comments I was mortified and quite angry.. Any opinions..? honesty.. |
