I sure see the word "lust" used a lot on this board. I find three definitions in my American Heritage Dictionary on the same page with a picture of a lungfish and next to the page with a picture of Martin Luther: 1. Sexual craving, especially excessive or unrestrained. 2. Any overwhelming desire or craving. 3. Obsolete. Pleasure; delight; relish It seems to me that the word is often used to denote what falls in the category of the third meaning, while being treated as if it were as extreme as in the first two. I think, for example, the pictures by Otto Lohmueller are a pleasure to view, a true delight, and I relish them. I even find some of them to be erotic. But I don't find myself slavering with excessive, unrestrained, overwhelming desire. Yet, would this be called "lust" nowadays? The problem I have with pictures is that I find myself lapsing into the which-is-the-best-of-all game. Instead of broadening my ability to appreciate the beauty of boys, it tends to narrow it. I enjoy stories about relationships, since they often have a bit if not a lot of truth in them about the way relationships work or fail. I too, have found that old pictures of YF's are a reminder of the good times we had and the bonds that were formed then. ---Ford |
