The Bible is not a legal document. It is a theological document.

The Old Testament is fairly predictable when taken in the context of getting a relatively primative civilization to force some semblance of order upon themselves. To primative man, eternal flames is more convincing than anything else, as death would be much more commonplace.

After all, I think I can accept that Adam and Eve is just Jewish mythology, much like the Greeks or Romans.

"If there was no such thing as God, man would invent him."

The question, then, is the Bible a fabrication of man, (I hope that raising the notion isn't considered blasphemy) or is it the work of a clever diety who took pity on a particular tribe of people and knew just what to tell them so that they would survive.

In the case of Noah, I think that is a case of people interpreting an event of large proportions as an act of God. Archeaology shows there was a flood in the middle east, but if God wanted to purge the world, there were still the Native Americas, the Asians and the Australian aborigines (spelling?)

I don't think my view is shared by many here, and tat's fine. But I think one has to take a lot of the Bible from a social context.
