That is a really stupid phrase, ain't it? :)

I still cannot believe that whole portions of human history are merely mistakes written by very human people.

The Exodus is still a prime example:
1) Why did God allow a murderer (Moses) to get away with murder then lead his people out of Egypt?
2) How does God justify delivering into the hands of said murderer His Ten Commandments...including "Thou shalt not kill"?
3) Did God just tell the people that Israel was their Promised Land then leave them to their own devices? Did he just ignore the wanton slaughter that followed?
4) Why the wanton slaughter? These were just people who happened to be in the path of where the Israelites wanted to go. Since the Israelites always attacked first, we will never know if these people were friendly and would have given aid to the outcasts or murderers who would have attacked them at the first chance.
5) Did God condone these murders? Yes, in fact he actually ordered them. Why? Because they did not believe in him? How could be expected to believe in him when they had never heard of him?

I could go on but I'll leave it at that. But, the facts are that God delivered his people into the hands of a murderer then told his people that it was a sin to kill and then ordered them to do so. And that God ordered the murders of innocent men, women and children and even CATTLE! for the simple reason that they did not believe in him...when he knew that at least some of them could not believe in him because they had never heard of him!

And this took place over a 40-year period. Are we to believe that this whole period in history is merely a writer's fallacy. Considering the facts that the incident places God in the role of murderer and that the writer was presumably Christian, are we to believe that human error created this story? One would think that, if the writer were to err, he would do it in a light that is more favorable to his beliefs, not detrimental.
