The lurker speaks! Sorry for my absence but... ahh well :)

I am among the group of people who actually liked A.I., despite its flaws. It's not a perfect film, but it is an excellent film (Oscar worthy, but Lord of the Rings will most likely come out on top)

First of all, and I know it's not really part of the topic, but I really liked Haley Joel Osment in it... for... many reasons :)

That virtuoso has inspired me to begin my own acting career, which will soon see my breakout performance as Henry Fonda in Twelve Angry Men *takes a bow*

I'll stop the shameless self-plugging now.

I always thought the Flesh Fair was really an analogy for religious persecution, more specifically, the Nazi Holocaust, something which Spielberg understandably has deep feelings about.

The Pinnocchio aspect can be seen as mankind striving for God's (or anyone's) acceptance. He wants to change himself to fit what he thinks is what the object of his affection wants him to be.

The idea of unappreciated love is not a new one, it could be an analogy for literally any human interaction, but since this is a creator-creation story, I'll bet it's a God-man analogy.

Think of it this way, David love his mommy, but she is incapable of SHOWING that she loves him also. He gets frustrated, and makes a mistake, and is therefore cast out, but not without some encouragement from mommy. It's not as if he was promised a Messiah, but he was given the myth that he could become a real boy. He was given the hope that he could redeem himself.

Anyway, I'd have to say that my favorite Spielberg film is Empire of the Sun (which I've bought on DVD). Not only is it a very intelligent and emotive (if underrated) film, it features a VERY cute 12 year old Christian Bale, whose acting was on a par with Haley Joel Osment's.
