Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

I’m a bit behind the times and for that I apologize. I watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for the second time yesterday and have just got hold of the book, which I shall probably wind up reading in its entirety within a day or two. I must admit that I was totally enamored with Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) as well as with Ronald Weasley (sorry, didn’t catch his name), and not at all with Draco Malfoy (didn’t catch his name either) – which is odd because I’m usually a total sucker for cute blond boys. Must have been his personality…

Anyways, this isn’t going to be a rave about the latest boy movie post (not that I mind doing that on occasion), but it actually has a purpose. A while back, before I watched the movie, I saw some discussion elsewhere on the net about how Christians shouldn’t watch the movie or take their children to see it since it was filled with satanic symbols, images and topics. Quite frankly, I found such a dismissal silly and having watched the movie, unfounded.

No argument that the medium of the movie is fantasy and in a more serious setting could be considered connected to the occult, but one could (using the same logic applied to HP) lodge the same complaint against ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis – and this book was clearly written as Christian allegory. And while I watched the movie (HP), I was struck by a great deal of Christian allegory also and this is the reason for this post – to discuss some of this allegory and even whether this is a good movie for Christian kids (and adults alike) to watch, from a uniquely BL perspective.

Thoughts, comments, criticisms, cute boy actor raves are all most welcome.

Take care and God bless,
J
