These are parables. I learned long ago not to take things so literally.

He is telling His listeners that if something draws them towards sin, it is better to take that thing away than be held captive to it.

I often use a verse that The Church of Christ (whom I loath, for personal reasons) uses to defend it's stance.

Hebrews 6:6

If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

This is basically saying, if you fall away, you might as well pack your bags for Hell, because there is no redemption. Why even try? You cannot be renewed in repentance.

Anyway, that is what I tell them it would have to mean, if they want to take it so literally. It comes down to, either you are once saved always saved, or once you fall, you can not be brought back. You cannot be "re-saved".

One could even claim that Mark 9:50 supports this.

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it?

Here is what I believe in my heart (I prayed and meditated on this issue a few years ago when it was troubling me): Hebrews 6:6 is telling us that Jesus' death was enough to save us, no matter how dirty we get. Because by saying that we need to be "resaved" we are saying that we must crucify Jesus again, therefor putting what He did for us to shame. His blood does not lose it's potency.

The wages of sin are death, but the wages of faith is salvation.

Even when the prodigal son was sleeping with the pigs, he was still his father's son. He may have been "lost" in life, however he NEVER was not his father's son.
