Seems to me the point Jesus is trying to make is not something about suppressing your own thoughts and feelings, but rather to transform yourself so you'll become someone who doesn't have sinful thoughts.

The distinction is between beating yourself into a pulp for being so Evil, and building yourself up to be someone who is good.
