To Jim: on sexual thoughts

Submitted by Bach on January 12 2001 19:58:27

If I have understood, your question was: how can thinking sexual thoughts be sinful?

I believe that the general opinion tends to be based on this passage about adultery:

But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5.28

Now, I am not sure how to respond to you, because I am aware that:

1. I think you probably make a distinction between thinking about doing things, and actually acting on urges/desires.

2. You do not believe that adultery is sinful.

Therefore, in your frame of reference, thinking sexual thoughts could not possibly be sinful. Of course, you don't recognize sin...

So what am I trying to explain here?

Maybe-- What use is it to find thoughts to be sinful... to set boundaries, to be aware of how our thoughts effect our actions, etc. Not terribly strong arguements in a secular society.

Was this a waste of my time?

Peace,
Bach
